History:

Deep in the depths of Technology Park, California, a mid-level scientist of Bell Pseudopharma looked at a single cell stuck to a glass slide that was being bathed in upper light frequencies of the visible spectrum. And something smiled back….

The discovery was fascinating to him. Period.
He had been researching mitochondria, a unique organelle that had now become a dire threat to the human race. For months it had become apparent that this recently emerging danger wasn’t going to simply die of its own accord. The several recent escapees told horrific, terrifying stories about creatures transforming into giant monsters. But here in the lab, with all its equipment and glaringly white sanitized walls the scientists were far removed from the dangers of said menace. The prospect of having a gentle, malleable form of such a power force was exhilarating, almost pleasing, in a way no one else but a single minded scientist could truly understand.

Being one of the more respected facilities in California at the time, a set of samples from a team recently escaped Japan made it to their labs for screening. After exhaustive testing, and verification from research assistants this scientist delivered a shocking discovery to his superiors. A nurse among the survivors, Mariko Anzai, was positive for a neo-mitochondrial blood type.

Yet this was not a malignant strain and in fact, affected every other sample in such a way that the massive energy generated by the mitochondria was harnessed and used for the benefit as a whole. The decision was then made to collect as much data and random samples as was possible, without alerting the authorities or any other prospective competition who might have wanted such a grant to fix the calamitous problem looming on the horizon. The director, one Hal Baldwin knew that this was the best chance to put his company on the map by solving humanities biggest threat so far.

Several months passed as he re-structured the company into the MIST Foundation, shifting his employees focus to the study of neo-mitochondrial properties. Even with the exhaustive testing and semi-effective weaponry however, they would not succeed in ‘curing’ what they assumed was a disease. Instead they too watched on as the solution brought the world to its knees, albeit from a glorified bomb shelter offering temporarily relief from the more drastic of effects of the ‘Solution’. Yet it was only a matter of time before their food stores would run out, the generator would rust and all their work then would be for nothing. They would need a living mitochondrial to help complete the puzzle when the time came to leave.

With the left over samples, an assistant researcher Dr. A. White volunteered to become a surrogate mother, to be impregnated with viable offspring was produced. There were several children in total, each sharing the same mother (Mariko) and a father picked at random from the group who’d once survived the initial disaster. Four died in vitro, one at birth and two more less than a month after birth. All died, save for the last little one. This child, like her predecessors was of course, coined Eve, a resilient infant whose blonde hair and blue eyes already proved a unique factor amongst the Mariko children. Somehow, and only speculation would come to light, the little blue eyed, fuzzy blonde haired baby had not only survived; she was thriving.

Years passed and Eve grew to be a compliant subject, due to a meticulously controlled childhood. Every meal measured, every activity planned, every lesson drilled into her head since she was old enough to understand words. In essence Eve became a cautious, scared little creature who had to live in a place which merely cultivated unquestionable obedience and the very basic emotions needed to survive. Alas, the one constant she could rely on, was the ability to be subservient to whomever her keen but not all together proficient survival instincts told her offered the best chance of survival. Despite this she had a few normal interests; drawing, playing and enjoying the small chocolate gifts her surrogate gave after an ’operation’.

Life was not great, but it was ‘normal’ and to her she had little reason to fight or argue about being a resource as opposed to a human. Her first taste of that freedom, came later, as bittersweet as it was liberating. It started with the generators beginning to fail. Then vast supply of food stored in freezers thawed out, rotting away. Eventually it forced those inside to venture up into the desert of the new world. Clinging to themselves, all but a few of them succumbed to a mercilessly fierce storm. Eve however, was separated from the group, the need to run outweighing the security that came with familiarity. Before she knew it, Eve was alone.

Wondering the desert for three days she was picked up by two brothers taking their farms produce to a nearby town via horse drawn cart. There she spent a brief week with them, before moving on, spending the rest of her childhood living from place to place, person to person. From an old lady who lived near a tent town, to a couple who fought ceaselessly about having their own children, there was never someone to be without, but a curious quirk about her survivalist nature made things a little hard to remember. She was curious and a quick learner but often felt over whelmed and once settled in, began forgetting where she had been, or who she had met. A town Shaman then found her wandering after she’d escaped from a rather violent domestic dispute and soon found herself in the company of a mute man, who made every effort to make her part of his family and his world. By this time her memory was a shambles, where only selective parts of her past were recalled. Not surprising she fell into his life right when they both needed someone to rely on.

The dream would only last a few years however as her teenage years approached and another doctor, a different creature that only wished to extend his life, managed to find and excavate the old facility. He knew exactly what she was, wasting no time in tracking her down. Once found he only had to rid himself of the mute burden, traveling up the west coast with his new possession, selling snake oil or whatever else he could peddle for food or equipment. Years flew by at his side, life almost coming back full circle as she uttered few words and kept to herself. Only one afternoon it was taken too far and she fled disregarding the consequences in favour of escaping a past that had caught up too her. Hiding in an old mine shaft, she waits for whatever tracker he might find to retrieve her. Hiding and organizing a surprise of her own.
